This is the first step into jeonji-gongye, the traditional Korean craft of layering colored hanji over a frame to build a form. Choose one of a magnet, keyring, tea coaster, bird object, or flower brooch (jiseung craft), and finish it within 60 minutes. Jeonji is the heart of this class, and we’ve added the flower brooch so you can try jiseung, the art of twisting paper into cord.
What You’ll Do
1. Tea Time & Hanji Story (10 min) Sit down with a cup of tea and hear the story of hanji. Touch it, tear it, and glue it with your own hands, while learning how it is made, what it is made from, how it has been used through the centuries, and how it lives on today. 2. Choose Your Materials & Colors (5 min) Pick the piece you’d like to make, then choose the hanji colors that speak to you. 3. Create (30 min) Tear colored hanji by hand and layer it piece by piece to make your own work. No experience is needed, as you’ll be guided through every step. 4. Drying (5 min) Take a short break while your piece dries. 5. Photos & Wrap-up (10 min) Take photos with your finished piece in the hanok, and end the class on a relaxed note.
