Hanji Layering Craft: Soban, Lamp, Square Box

In this class, you’ll take your time with jeonji-gongye, the traditional Korean craft of layering colored hanji over a frame to build a form. You’ll make a larger piece that you can use in everyday life. Choose one of a hanji mood lamp or a square box or a table called soban in korean and spend 180 minutes completing it at a relaxed pace.

[What You’ll Do]

1. Tea Time & Hanji Story (10 min) Sit down with a cup of tea and hear the story of hanji. Touch it, tear it, and feel it with your own hands, while learning how it is made, what it is made from, how it has been used through the centuries, and how it lives on today.

2. Choose Your Piece & Colors (10 min) See the pieces you can make, then choose the hanji colors that speak to you. With a longer class, you can plan a more detailed color palette and layering design.

3. Build the Frame & Create (130 min) You’ll start by assembling pre-cut hapji (sturdy layered paperboard) pieces into the frame of your piece, learning how its structure comes together. Once the frame is ready, cut the hanji to fit, then tear colored hanji by hand and layer it piece by piece to build your own work. With extra time, you can blend colors, work on finer details, and refine the finish. You’ll be guided through every step.

4. Final Drying (15 min) Relax with a cup of tea while your piece dries.

5. Photos & Wrap-up (15 min) Take photos with your finished piece in the hanok. If you made a lamp, see how the light glows through the layers of hanji. Then end the class on a relaxed note.
