In this 120-minute class, you’ll fill a canvas by tearing, layering, and tapping colored hanji into place. Instead of mixing paint, you build color by stacking layers of hanji, and the layers settle into the surface to become the picture. We provide a ready-made canvas with the base layer (chobae) already applied, so you can skip the preparation and go straight into hanji painting techniques.
[What You’ll Do]
1. Tea Time & Hanji Story (10 min) Sit down with a cup of tea and hear the story of hanji: how it is made, what it is made from, how it has been used through the centuries, and how it lives on today. Touch it and tear it with your own hands to feel its texture.
2. Choose Your Design & Sketch (10 min) Decide on the design you’d like to create, then sketch it onto your canvas. Choose the colored hanji that speaks to you as well.
3. Hanji Painting (80 min) Learn the basic techniques of hanji painting while completing your own piece.
Understanding the flow of the hanji fiber Composing the picture Planning colors and layers Using solid colors, in-between tones, and blended colors
No experience is needed, as you’ll be guided through every step.
4. Final Drying (10 min) Relax with a cup of tea while your piece dries.
5. Photos & Wrap-up (10 min) Take photos with your finished piece in the hanok, and end the class on a relaxed note.
