Taking a step beyond the 2-hour class, this master course starts from the very foundation: applying the base layer (chobae) onto a wooden board yourself. You’ll build your own canvas from scratch, then fill it by tearing, layering, and tapping colored hanji into place. Instead of mixing paint, you build color by stacking layers of hanji, and the layers settle into the surface to become the picture.
[What You’ll Do]
1. Tea Time & Hanji Story (10 min) Sit down with a cup of tea and hear the story of hanji: how it is made, what it is made from, how it has been used through the centuries, and how it lives on today. Touch it and tear it with your own hands to feel its texture.
2. Choose Your Subject & Colors (10 min) Decide on the subject you’d like to create, then choose the colored hanji that speaks to you.
3. Make Your Own Canvas (40 min) You’ll try the key steps of chobae yourself. Apply the base layer onto a wooden board and build the foundation of your hanji painting with your own hands. This is a chance to understand how the base shapes the quality of the finished piece.
4. Sketch & Hanji Painting (90 min) Sketch your design directly onto the canvas you’ve just made, then learn the techniques of hanji painting while building up your piece. With plenty of time, you can add detail and depth.
Understanding the flow of the hanji grain Composing the picture Planning colors and layers Using solid colors, in-between tones, and blended colors
5. Final Drying (15 min) Relax with a cup of tea while your piece dries.
6. Photos & Wrap-up (15 min) Take photos with your finished piece in the hanok, and end the class on a relaxed note.
You may reschedule once, free of charge, up to 3 days before your booking. The class takes place at Bukchon Hanji Studio, 2F, 18 Bukchon-ro 11-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
