In this 120-minute class, you’ll learn about joomchi, the traditional Korean technique of wetting hanji, then rubbing and kneading it by hand until it takes on a leather-like texture. Then you’ll turn ready-made joomchi into a small object you can use in everyday life. We provide the joomchi, and all the fittings you’ll need are available in the studio, so you can simply arrive and begin. Choose one of a lamp cover, a pouch, a card holder, or a keyring.
[What You’ll Do]
1. Tea Time & Hanji Story (10 min) Sit down with a cup of tea and hear the story of hanji: how it is made, what it is made from, how it has been used through the centuries, and how it lives on today. Touch it with your own hands and feel the strength of mulberry fiber.
2. The Story of Joomchi (15 min) Discover how joomchi uses only water and the movement of hands, with no glue or adhesives, to bind the fibers of hanji into a stronger, richly textured new paper. See how it’s made, and how contemporary artists use it today.
3. Choose Your Joomchi & Object (10 min) Touch the joomchi sheets prepared for you, feel their textures and colors, then choose the sheet and the object you’d like to make.
4. Make Your Object (70 min) Cut your joomchi to size and combine it with fittings to complete your own piece. No experience is needed, as you’ll be guided through every step.
Lamp cover Pouch Card holder Keyring
5. Photos & Wrap-up (15 min) Take photos with your finished piece in the hanok, and end the class on a relaxed note.
[Choosing Between Classes] If you’d like to make joomchi yourself, we recommend our 180-minute Joomchi Master Class, where you’ll make 3 to 4 sheets of joomchi.
